hawks post from old forum

I thought i would post a topic on how to keep your PC free from spyware, malware and viruses.
First off you should be running a firewall....windows xp has a built in firewall but you can search google for good free firewalls but i recommend not getting zone alarm.
Next you should be running an antivirus program to stop viruses getting into your computer in the first place, again if you do a google search you should find free antivirus programs. I use kaspersky internet security suite which has a firewall and antivirus built into one program. If any of you wish to have kaspersky Private message me for more details. Next you will need a good antispyware, antimalware program and i'll give you link to a very good one that is 100% free....called malwarebytes. the link to download it is:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

A firewall does not need to be updated....just some ports allowed if you have trouble with online gaming....again i'll try and help those of you not sure how to open ports on your PC's firewall. your antivrus and antispyware and antimalware programs should be updated on a daily basis for new virus and antispyware and malware definitions, you should do a scan with these programs at the very least once a week.
If however like me and you know a lot about PC's you can do these scans if and when you want or when needed.

If you'd like help doing some "housecleaning", I can recommend a program called CCleaner, it's 100% free, has no adware or spyware, and helps keep your registry and your machine nice and clean from all those temporary files that windows forgets to remove on it's own.

Another freebie to look in to is Spybot Search & Destroy, I used to use this one but I only use CCleaner and my Norton Suite nowadays.

Aye spybot S&D is good...i've got it........i've also got CCleaner and a program called cleanup.....also i forgot to say that to keep your pc running at optimum you also need a registry cleaner.....as the pc's registry can get clogged up with reg entries that are not needed....sometimes when you uninstall games or programs there are some registry keys that are not removed during the uninstall......but i must point out....do not attempt to use a registry cleaner that has not got an option to remove registry values that are "safe" to remove. Also do not attempt to edit your registry if you do not know what you are doing.
Also these anti virus and anti malware/spyware programs do not always work in either finding the virus or removing it.....sometimes you will need additional tools specifically made to remove certain viruses.....tools like virtumondo fix or combofix...there are loads others.....also if you cannot remove a virus, or the virus is blocking your programs from running.......boot into safe mode and scan....in fact when you get a virus on your pc....the recommended way to scan and remove is by starting your comp in safe mode, why you may ask??? simple in safe mode windows will only load a limited number of essential files for it to run in safe mode.....i've seen viruses that have disabled kaspersky, malwarebytes, spyware doctor and spybot S&D from either updating, scanning or even opening at all.....but in safe mode they all worked fine and removed the virus because in safe mode the files that were infected were not able to execute (load) when windows was in safe mode.

Best free spyware and anti virus programme out there has got to be Microsoft Security Essentials. Read a review of this Anti Virus in PC Format it scored higher than alot of the so-called best anti-virus programmes that you have to pay for. Free for all who own a legit copy of Windows ( any version I think ) Heres a link for the download if anyone is intrested.
