Welcome to the second installment of the Battleblog, a blog series taking you all the way to the launch of Battlefield 3 on October 25th! In this blog series, you’ll learn more about every aspect of our biggest shooter ever. This time out is a look at the classes found in multiplayer with Senior Mulitplayer Designer Alan Kertz.
Here at DICE, we’re very proud of the team play functionality that we have become known and loved for in the Battlefield series, and we’re continuing to embrace that approach for Battlefield 3, but not without a few upgrades for the new game. In Battlefield 3, we’re making sure each of the four playable classes (Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon) are each completely capable of holding their own in combat. While they each have different specialties, each class is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
If you’re that kind of lone wolf player who simply wants to jump in and cook some fools, that’s perfectly fine – we’re making sure each class in Battlefield 3 packs a mean punch on their own, giving you another chance to play it your way. However, we’re also hard at work fine-tuning each class and their unique team play capabilities, so squads in Battlefield 3 will be able to function tightly, giving even more reasons to team play than ever before.

The popular fighting movement from BF2 will not be making it's way into Battlefield 3 according to EA's community manager, Daniel Matros. Don't know what dolphin diving is?
Battlefield Wiki wrote: Dolphin diving is a tactic formerly used in Battlefield 2, which involved the player going prone while still in midair due to a jump. This was repeated over and over again so that the player could keep moving at a reasonable speed while still only showing their head to their opponent as they would when going prone normally. As a result of pressure from the community, the version 1.21 patch removed the ability to dolphin dive from the game.
It'll be interesting to see how players adapt to the Battlefield 3 environment. Maybe bunny-hopping will fix the need for players to avoid the enemy's suppression fire.

Q: What can we expect for PC requirements to run BF3? A: We’d love to tell you, but we’re not quite ready to release minimum specs just yet. I can tell you that the specs will not be anything crazy or Crysis-like. More details to come.
Q: Will we see the command rose or something similar? A: That’s a good question! We do offer a lot of set up and customization on the PC for people to decide how they want to play. I’m not exactly sure how we’ll be doing the command rose.
Q: Will there be a server browser for consoles? A: There will not be a server browser for consoles. We just recently announced "battle log" which is PC based but it’s a really friendly community tool. It allows you to branch out with friends and set up and join private matches. It’s also great for E-Sports, if you’re playing competitively, because it’s going to work with MLG and ESL and all those partners. So you’ll be able to authenticate matches without having to take screenshots and all that kind of stuff because the data feed is going to be encrypted and secure and be sent to them.

In a tweet by L_Twin earlier today, he stated that the team had given a demo of Battlefield 3 to their "boss's boss." Said boss: "he was near speechless when it was over, mind blown, jaw dropped." L_Twin finished his tweet with stating that the team (the developers) had aced the Battlefield 3 demo.
Clearly, Battlefield 3 is making strides. This presentation was obviously not just a PowerPoint presentation of what Frostbite 2.0 can do, but a full blown demo of the game. Because of this, we can expect that Battlefield 3 is in a mid - alpha stage, and will be getting to a beta stage in the next 6 - 9 months. The "boss" probably saw actual game play, characters, models, and maps for Battlefield 3. Plus something that we haven't seen yet, an official Battlefield 3 logo!
With that in mind, it is fairly certain that we won't just be seeing Frostbite 2.0 demos at GDC 2011.

Every few months, EA sends a demo reel around its studios and offices, showing off what they’re working on. The latest of such “demo reels” features a video of Battlefield 3, according to a NeoGAF forum member, who works at EA. He said:
“I saw that BF3 had guns, explosions, vehicles, large maps and was played from the first person perspective. I got a few flashes of the HUD, but have no idea about how they’re evolving the game’s play mechanics.”
The demo reels are distributed among EA’s marketing staff, to stay in the loop on what the company is doing. If they already have a demo reel of Battlefield 3, perhaps a public unveiling of the game is not that far away. It might be revealed as early as GDC in April, where DICE is scheduled to give talks.
EA has announced that Battlefield 3 will be unveiled on March 1, 2011, a good six weeks from now. The unveiling will be done at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, IGN reports. EA will use the occasion to unveil several games, but for us, of course, the main highlight is Battlefield 3.
